Daily Event for January 14, 2011

On January 14, 1890 a fire broke out at the Northern Central railroad's grain elevator #3 in Lower Canton, Maryland near Baltimore. The fire was started by cinders from the funnel of the steamship North Erie and spread to two other ships, Sacrobosco and Rhio. By the end of the day three men on Sacrobosco were dead and many others injured and all three ships were badly damaged. Two of the three were rebuilt and returned to service, the third Rhio, I am unable to find any information on and I can only assume that the name of the ship had been misreported.

Sacrobosco was renamed Conemaugh, she went missing after sailing from Coronel, Chile on Feb. 28, 1940 and North Erin succumbed to a fire on June 19, 1891 near Taranto, Italy, she was scuttled the next day.
