May 17, 1942 the Italian submarine Veniero sailed from Caglilari, Sardinia for a patrol off the Balearic Islands, a signal was sent from the boat on May 29 after which she and the fifty-eight men onboard were never heard from again. It is possible she was sunk by the RAF on June 7, but this has never been confirmed.
