Daily Event for September 16, 2010

Launched on March 28, 1903 at Earl's Shipbuilding in Hull, the 235' cargo ship Africa sailed for the Bennett Steamship Company. On September 16, 1915 she hit a mine laid the day before by SMS UC-6 off Deal. The master managed to run her up on the beech to save her from sinking, but the ship was a total loss. Sadly two crewmen were killed in the explosion. UC-6 shared the same fate on Sept. 27, 1917 when she hit a mine, however none of her crew survived.
