Launched on March 28, 1903 at Earl's Shipbuilding in Hull, the 235' cargo ship Africa sailed for the Bennett Steamship Company. On September 16, 1915 she hit a mine laid the day before by SMS UC-6 off Deal. The master managed to run her up on the beech to save her from sinking, but the ship was a total loss. Sadly two crewmen were killed in the explosion. UC-6 shared the same fate on Sept. 27, 1917 when she hit a mine, however none of her crew survived. |
