September 8, 1877 the yard of C. Mitchell and Company in Newcastle launched the passenger-cargo ship Homer, the ship was owned by the Glover Brothers of London. The ship did not last even a year from the time of completion, Homer went missing after sailing out of Boston en route to Liverpool on Dec. 17, 1878.
