March 18, 1905 the armored cruiser Washington (Armored Cruiser #11) was launched at New York Shipbuilding Corp. in Camden, New Jersey. The ship was christened by Miss Helen Stewart Wilson. Washington had a long career, she at one time was flagship for the Commander-in-Chief, United States Fleet. In 1916 she was renamed Seattle and served in the Great War as a convoy escort and transport. In 1920 she was classified CA-11 and in 1941 reclassified IX-39, after 50 years of service she was scrapped in New York. |
