On Oct. 2, 1917 the fishing vessel Willing Boys hit a mine laid by SMS UC-14 near Smith's Knoll and sank, five men including the skipper were lost with the ship. One other ship, the fishing vessel Reliance, was sunk in the same area by another mine laid by the German submarine, ten of her crew were lost, this was on Oct. 7, 1917. However by the time the Reliance went down, UC-14 herself had become a victim of a mine on Oct. 3, 1917 at the entrance to Zeebrugge harbor, all seventeen of her crew were lost with her. |
