September 5, 1929 Mrs. Calvin Coolidge, wife of the former president, broke a bottle of mineral water on the bows of the new cruiser Northampton CA-26 and she slid down the ways. She and her crew served proudly in the second world war until Dec. 1, 1942 when she slid under the waves at the Battle of Tassafaronga off Savo Island. |
