Daily Event for September 1, 2009

Sept. 1, 1942 The Japanese submarine I-29 torpedoed and sank the French cargo ship Gazcon. This ship was built in Scotland in 1932 by Alexander Stephen & Sons and was owned by Compagnie de Navigation D' Orbigny of Paris, but had been taken up by the Ministry of War Transport in 1940 after the fall of France.

I don't have any further details about the loss, other than the names of eleven of the men who perished (some published information indicates that twelve were lost). The I-29 became a war loss herself, on July 26, 1944 she was torpedoed and sunk by USS Sawfish SS-276 while en route to Japan with a rocket engine from a ME-262 Comet and a jet engine from an ME-262, both were being sent to Japan to aid them in the development of the technology. Only one crewman survived the sinking.
