June 22, 1940 the Norwegian freighter Randsfjord was torpedoed and sunk by U-30 southwest of Ireland. The ship, built in 1937 sank three minuets after being struck by one torpedo on the port side. While the ship went under rapidly, all but three men managed to escape to the lifeboats, albeit two were badly injured when they were crushed between the lifeboat and the hull of the ship. The survivors were questioned and released. They were rescued a day and a half later by SS Port Hobart and landed at Glasgow. |
