During an attack against a coastal convoy off Lowestoft on Nov. 20, 1940 the German Schnellboots S-54, S-57 and S-38 were caught by surprise by HMS Campbell L-60 and HMS Garth L-20. The S-38 was rammed by HMS Campbell and sank, becoming the first Schnellboot sunk in action. Five of the crew were killed, the rest, including the commanding officer, Kapitänleutnant Hans Detlefsen were picked up and taken prisoner of war. |
