The famous shipyard of John Brown & Company received their last order for a passenger ship on Dec. 30, 1964, it was for the 69,000 ton Queen Elizabeth II. Before she was launched on Sept. 20, 1967 the yard was merged into a group named Upper Clyde Shipbuilders, the Scottish version of British Shipbuilders Corp. She would be the last passenger ship launched at the yard that launched such ships as Lusitania, Aquitania, Queen Mary and the Queen Elizabeth.

The press at the time reported that HM Queen Elizabeth II, who christened the ship, had in fact named the ship after herself, however this is untrue. First of all it was the Cunard Line who chose the name and second it was named after the first Queen Elizabeth of the line, which was named after HM Queen Elizabeth, now the Queen Mother. Since this was the second ship named Queen Elizabeth the number 2 and not II was used in the name. She sailed for Cunard until 2007 when she was sold to Dubai World for a reported $100 million who will turn her into a floating hotel at The Palm Jumeirah in Dubai.
