Daily Event for July 10, 2008

During an air raid on the harbor at Augusta, Sicily on July 10, 1940 the Italian destroyer Leone Pancaldo was sunk by Swordfish aircraft from HMS Eagle. The destroyer sank in shallow water and was raised and repaired. The ship was attacked and sunk by aircraft again on April 30, 1943, this time by the USAAF and this time for good. She was sent to the bottom near Cape Bon with the loss of 124 of her crew. 156 survived along with most of the German troops she was transporting.
