Daily Event for December 14

On Dec. 14, 1844 the paddle steamer Belle of Clarksville was rammed and sunk by another Mississippi River steamer after crossing her bow to avoid shallow water. The accident occurred about 30 miles north of Natchez, Mississippi. Few details are available but it is known that thirty-six people were killed.
