Daily Event for November 15

Nov. 15, 1849 the 240' sidewheeler Louisiana exploded at the Gravier Street Dock in New Orleans, Louisiana killing 86. The cause was determined to have been a boiler explosion which in such a new vessel (built in 1848 in Jeffersonville, Indiana), might have caused concern to her builder. However her engines and boilers had come from another riverboat and it is unknown how old they were. The explosion not only destroyed the Louisiana but also wrecked the SS Bostonia and the SS Storm which were both tied up nearby. Of the 86 who died it is unknown to me how many came from each vessel.
