November 10, 1888: While leaving New York in a heavy fog the Cunard (then called British & North American Royal Mail Steam Packet Co.), liner Umbria ran down and sank the French freighter Iberia. Umbria's captain McMickan proceeded past Sandy Hook, N.J. at nearly full speed even though the visibility was almost nill. In the investigation that followed McMickan was judged to have been at fault for not slowing down. Fortunately no deaths were reported in the incident. |
