January 27, 1918: The Cunard liner Andania was torpedoed and sunk by the U-46. The Andania was built in 1913 and was one of three ships Cunard built expressly for the Canadian trade route. She was put into service as a trooper in October of 1914 but was released from duty on March 18, 1916. She was put on the London - New York route in May and was on this route when lost. She was attacked north of Rathlin Island, Ireland while carrying about 240 people, only seven were killed. Both of her sisters were also lost in World War 1. Alaunia on October 19, 1916 (mine) and Aurania on Feb. 4, 1918 to the UB-67. |
