Daily Event for February 22

February 22, 1901: Ending the twenty day voyage from Yokohama, Japan at San Francisco the City of Rio de Janeiro's captain sailed into a dense fog bank in the bay. The pilot, Fredrick Jordan, warned capt Ward that he should wait until the fog cleared. The captain however decided to take the ship into port.

He should have listened to the pilot because soon the ship struck an underwater rock which mortally wounded her. It took only an hour for the City of Rio de Janeiro to slip beneath the waves taking the captain and one hundred and four others with him.
