Daily Event for April 9

April 9, 1821 the final three survivors from the whale ship Essex, which was abandoned on Nov. 21, 1820,
were rescued from Henderson Island. The Australian ship Surry was sent to search for them by the captain
of the USS Constellation, who had heard of them from capt. Pollard of the Essex. One hundred and eleven
days after they left their ship Seth Weeks, William Wright and Thomas Chapple, barely alive and suffering
from starvation, were finally taken aboard the Surry. Ending what must have been a living hell.
