Daily Event for July 11, 2005

July 11, 1917 was the last time anyone heard from SMS U-69. The U-66 type submarine was built at Germainawerft in Kiel and had made five successful war patrols, sinking 31 ships totaling 102,875 tons,
the largest being the British ship Avenger, at 13,441 tons (June 14, 1917). U-69 had only one commander, Kapitänleutnant Ernst Wilhelms, who was lost with the forty members of his crew. No explanation has been made for the loss of this boat.
