1945: The USS Saipan CVL-48 was launched. Later renamed Arlington and reclassified as a communications relay ship, AGMR-2, Saipan was the first carrier to have a jet squadron. As Arlington she went to Vietnam and was also involved in the recovery of the Apollo 8, 10 and 11 space capsules. She received 7 campaign stars for service in Vietnam.
