Daily Event for December 12

Dec. 12, 1939: The Russian steamship Indigirka hit the rocks near the northern coast of Japan's Hokkaido Island. The ship did not sink but fell over on her side. The hold where she was carrying convicts was underwater and they could not be saved. About 740 were drowned, but when they cut the hold open 2 days later 26 were still alive and were rescued.
