Daily Event for August 26

August 26, 1912: The steamship Kursk sailed from Antwerp for St. Petersburg never to be seen again. Built in 1881 she was owned by the United Steamship Co. and spent her life plying the waters of Europe and
Scandinavia. At 246 feet long she had a gross registered tonnage of only 1,131. Built as a cargo ship she did have accommodations for about 20 passengers. After she departed Antwerp it is presumed that she was lost in a gale that hit later that day. Only three bodies of the twenty seven people on board (7 passengers 20 crew) were ever found.
