Sunk July 5, 1942 (British mine) while escorting convoy QP-13. Five other ships ran into the field and were lost. (Heffron, Hybert, John Randolph, Massmar & Rodina. 1 other, Exterminator, also hit a mine, but was towed to port.) Location: North Atlantic, Denmark Strait, 15 miles NNW of Latar, Iceland. (66.35N - 23.14W) Sources differ on number of casualties from 80 to 149, these numbers may include 39 men who had survived the sinking of HMS Edinburgh and were returning home. 7 survivors, 1 survivor from HMS Edinburgh (this number also differs). |
