Daily Event for August 6, 2012

During exercises in the Adriatic on August 6, 1928 the Italian submarine F-14 was rammed by the torpedo boat Guiseppe Missori about 7 miles west of Brioni Island. There were twenty-seven men on board the boat and most survived the sinking only to be entombed on the sea floor. Rescue attempts began immediately, but rough seas made the operation difficult. One hundred and thirty feet of water stood between the trapped men and the surface.

It was sometime overnight when a line was secured around the boat and communication and air lines were attached, the survivors told them they were in the bow, but that poison gas was accumulating in the submarine. Sometime on the 7th the boat was being raised, however as she neared the surface the operation had to be aborted and F-14 again went to the bottom. Not long after this, all communication with the crew stopped. When the boat was finally raised, 34 hours after it sank, it was found that the crew succumbed to the chlorine gas, there were no survivors.
