Daily Event for September 15, 2010

After sinking over 11,000 tons of shipping SMS U-6 met her end off Stavenger, Norway when HMS E-16 saw the smoke coming from her engines while they were charging their batteries. A well placed torpedo sank the boat leaving only five survivors in the water, the commanding officer of E-16, Lt. Commander (later Vice Admiral) Cecil P. Talbot, D.S.O., maneuvered his boat into position and rescued the men in the water. The twenty-four other crewmen of U-6, including the commanding officer, went down with the boat. Photos were taken of the rescue of the German seamen and these photos were later used by the British press to show the compassion of the British toward the German enemy following the Baralong Incident.
