Daily Event for August 8, 2010

August 8, 1869 the day after the Germania was wrecked at Trepassey Bay in Newfoundland, captain W. Donald and the cargo ship Cleopatra hit the rocks only four miles away, fog was again the cause for the ship being off course. The Cleopatra was a 221' long freighter built by William Pile, Hay & Co. in Sunderland, England in 1865. She was owned by the British Colonial Steamship Company Ltd. (Temperly Line) of London and was en route from Montreal to London. As in the case of the Germania, there was no loss of life, everyone got off the ship into the lifeboats, but they, unlike the survivors of the Germania, were not picked up, they took their open boats all the way to St. John's arriving safely on the 10th.
