Daily Event for January 6, 2009

January 6, 1938 the Italian submarine Scire was launched at OTO in Muggiano, Italy. Several ships were sunk by Scire, but the most famous action she was involved in was an attack on Alexandria, Egypt on Dec. 19, 1941 when Italian frogmen attached limpet mines to the hulls of three warships, sinking one and damaging the other two. A cargo ship was also damaged in the attack. The warships damaged were HMS Jervis F-00, HMS Valiant and HMS Queen Elizabeth sank to the shallow bottom of the harbor. Probably the single best day ever for an Italian submarine. The British paid them back on Aug. 10, 1943 when Scire was depth charged and sunk by HM Trawler Islay T-172, none of the crew survived.
