Daily Event for December 29, 2009


Dec. 29, 1943 the escort carrier Ommaney Bay CVE-79 was launched at Kaiser in Vancouver, Washington. She would be one of the unfortunate carriers that would feel the fury of the Kamikaze. She was hit by on Jan. 4, 1945 by one aircraft, but the two bombs the plane carried penetrated the flight deck and exploded below decks setting off fully fueled aircraft and ammunition. She was abandoned and scuttled with a torpedo fired from USS Burns DD-588.
