The classic film Operation Petticoat, Cary Grant is the captain of the submarine Sea Tiger, the movie begins at the Cavite Navy Yard in the Philippines, his boat is tied up alongside the dock when Japanese aircraft attack the yard. His boat settles on the bottom, out of the war before it had even begun. In the movie the crew raises the boat and finally makes it to Australia, in reality it was a little different. On December 10, 1941 the Japanese attacked the Philippines and USS Sealion SS-195 was tied up alongside the dock at the Cavite Navy Yard. She was hit twice and settled on the bottom, however unlike the movie the attack left four men dead. The boat was a wreck so it was stripped of what ever useful material could be had and finally blown up on site, leaving nothing but a wreck for the Japanese. |
