June 4, 1917 the passenger ship SS Southland was sunk by SMS U-70. She was built as Vaderland for International Navigation Company, but spent her career under charter to various other lines. She rammed and sank the Naworth Castle on Jan. 19, 1907 and was used as a troop transport by the Admiralty in 1915 and was torpedoed on Sept. 2, 1915, about forty crewmen and troops were killed. Four other names were added to the list of those who died in the ship when she was lost. |
