Daily Event for June 2

Built in 1896 at Hai-Mun the 239' long passenger/cargo ship changed hands and names several times during her career. Almost fifty years later the ship was still in service, now for the Japanese. A Japanese submarine sank her in June of 1943 under the name Wing Wah, but the Japanese, needing as much shipping as they could get, raised and repaired the old ship and renamed her Eika Maru. On June 2, 1945 while in the Gulf of Tonkin the USS Tambor SS-198 slammed several torpedoes into the ship sending her to the bottom. It is unknown to me how many people, if any, were killed, but the submarine reported seeing survivors leaving the ship in lifeboats. What happened to them is also unknown to me.
