Daily Event for May 2

May 2, 1916 the 230' cargo ship Rochester City hit a mine and sank in the North Sea off Felixstowe. The
mine was laid by SMS UC-10 which was under the command of Oberleutnant zur See Alfred Nitzsche. One
man was lost during the sinking, but the rest of the crew managed to survive.

The UC-10 lasted only a little more than three months before she was torpedoed and sunk by HMS E-54, her
whole crew went with her, but Nitzsche was not on board. He transferred off the boat in June and became the
commanding officer of SMS UC-19, however he could not avoid death because on Dec. 6, 1916 his new boat
was sent to the bottom by HMS Ariel, along with her entire crew.
