Daily Event for April 7, 2009

A new breed of carrier for the U.S. Navy was launched at New York Shipbuilding Corp. in Camden, New Jersey on April 7, 1925. Saratoga CV-3 slid down the ways as an aircraft carrier, but had been laid down and partly constructed as a Lexington class battlecruiser. Due to the limitations of the Washington Treaty she was converted on the ways and when she took to the water was the first aircraft carrier launched by the United States. Saratoga served through World War II and was sunk during the Operation Crossroads atomic bomb tests.
