Daily Event for March 19

On a cold and disagreeable March 19, 1890 the cruiser Newark C-1 was launched at the shipyard of William
Cramp & Sons in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Despite the snow and slush over 6,000 people from all over the
country turned out to see the first of a new generation of cruiser. She slid down the ways at 12:30 P.M. to the
cheers of the assembled crowd and one champagne soaked Admiral. As the ship's sponsor, Miss Annie Boutelle,
broke the bottle on the bow, Rear Admiral James E. Jouett, who was President William Henry Harrison's representative, and who had been standing a bit too close, was also christened.
