July 8, 1917 the Moss Steamship Company's cargo ship Vendee left Bordeaux, France with a load of general cargo destine for Liverpool. She made her way down the Gironde into the Bay of Biscay and right into a minefield laid by the UC-71. The 1,295 ton ship went to the bottom just 13 miles into the bay taking three men with her.
