Daily Event for March 22

During the night of March 22, 1668 the sailing vessel John & Lucy became stranded on the rocks off Montauk, New York. She had been sailing from Rhode Island and on board were 15 crewmen, and some livestock, including goats, sheep (2 each), three horses, a dog named Lyon and a few cats. The ship was stuck all night and in the morning 12 of the crew took a boat and made it to New London, Connecticut where they organized two other ships to return to the wreck and pick up the remaining crew.

The rescue was delayed for a few days due to the weather, but was finally successful for the three men still on board. I have no details regarding the fate of the animals.
