Daily Event for March 17


On March 17, 1800 the 1st Rate ship HMS Queen Charlotte caught fire in the Ligurian Sea off Livorno
(Leghorn), Italy. The fire started around 6 a.m. and by 11 had reached the powder magazine. The ship
exploded and sank so quickly only a few managed to get off the ship, almost the entire crew of 700 were
killed.
