Daily Event for March 17

March 17, 1926 The New Zealand Shipping companies SS Paparoa burned and sank in the south Atlantic near
the island of St. Helena. The SOS was answered by the P&O liner Barrabool. They were close enough to
rescue all on board. In 1911 her sister, the Papanui suffered a similar fate in the same area. She burned after
her coal caught fire and was beached in St. John's Bay, St. Helena. In this case also all on board were saved.
