On the night of Dec. 1-2, 1942 the Ellerman Lines cargo ship City of Bath was torpedoed and sunk by the U-508 off the coast of Guyana. Most of the crew managed to escape, but three men were lost. The eighty survivors were in two groups, fifty-two were picked up by the SS City of Dunkirk the following day. The remaining twenty-eight made land at Trinidad on Dec. 5. |
