Daily Event for December 2


December 2, 1940: The British armed merchant cruiser HMS Forfar was sunk by the U-99. The Forfar was a the former liner Montrose, (not the one from yesterday's story.) requisitioned by the Admiralty in 1939. She was en route to escort a convoy when the U-99 found her. 500 miles west of Ireland, she was hit by four torpedoes from the German submarine on Dec.1 but did not sink until 04:50 on the 2nd. Capt. Hardy and 172 men died on the ship, 21 were rescued by British and Canadian ships.
