Daily Event for June 10

June 10, 1945 the USS William D. Porter DD-579 sank after a Kamikaze attack off Okinawa. While the aircraft missed the ship because of quick maneuvering by the helmsman the plane exploded under water breaking the ship's back and causing extensive flooding. The crew struggled against all odds for three hours to keep her afloat but, the order was finally given to abandon ship and she soon rolled over and slipped beneath the waves. While the ship was lost none of her crew fell victim, they were all taken off by other ships.
