Events of the day

1851: The Atiet Rohoman, an Indian sailing ship, sank off Bombay with the loss of 175 lives.

1906: The Elder Dempster liner Etolia was wrecked off Cap Sable. Built by Harland & Wolff  in 1887, she was 346' long by 41' wide and displaced 3,270 tons. No loss of life reported.

1909: The Cunard liner Slavonia was wrecked two miles south-west of Flores Island. Built in 1902 and launched as Yamuna, the 10,606 ton liner was bought by Cunard in 1904. At the time of the wreck she was carrying 410 passengers from New York to Trieste. The captain sent out a distress call which was answered by two German liners, the Princess Irene and the Batavia. All the passengers and finally the crew were taken aboard the German ships. The Slavonia was written off as a total loss by Cunard.
