Daily Event for June 20, 2005

1822: HMS Drake, a 10 gun warship, was wrecked off the coast of Newfoundland. No figures are available to me but a great loss of life was reported.

1868: The side-wheel steamer Morning Star collided with an unknown vessel near Lorain, Ohio resulting in the death of 54 people.

1915: The P&O liner Nubia was wrecked off Ceylon.

1934: The North German Lloyd liner Dresden was wrecked near Karmoe Island in the North Sea. The liner (formerly named Zeppelin and Ormuz) had been chartered by the Nazi Strength Through Joy organization. The liner rolled over and sank the next day. Of the 980 passengers on board only 4 were killed. This happened when the lifeboat they were in hit the ships propeller and capsized.
