I am researching a specific incident relating to HMS Vivien on or about 20 Oct 1931. The captain at the time was my wife's grandfather who died aged 41 in Dec 1931 from illness. In his otherwise spotless naval record there is reference to an incident of 'poor seamanship' involving HMS Vivien and HMS Vidette on 20 Oct 1931. There is record of the drowning of an Able Seaman from Vidette on 19 Oct 1931 as he was setting up gunnery targets in 25 mph wind and I wonder if this might be termed 'poor seamanship' by the officers. Any information or leads would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,
Steele Haughton

I have spent a lot of time enjoying the pictures and words contained here, thank you. My father, CPO Ernest Fenlon b1899, served in the Royal Navy from 1916 until 1945 and served most of WWII on HMS Vivien, on which I was Christened in 1940. My wife has been very patient with me as I spend a great deal of time searching for info on the Vivien. I have tried to find others who like me who have connections with the ship. I remember in the 50's Wilf Pickles had the Vivien's Bell on his show with another lad who was also named after the Vivien but who like me has the male version of Vivan. I have at last decided to see if through your media I can have any luck.

Thank you,
Viv Fenlon
