The cargo ship Ramapo had an eighteen year history before Feb. 16, 1942 when the U-108 torpedoed and sank her 200 miles northwest of Bermuda. She was built in 1924 in Scotland as Baron Wemyss for the Kelvin Shipping Co. (H. Hogarth & Sons) Ardrossan, Scotland, in 1937 she was sold to Alberto Tomaso Rosasco, Genoa Italy and
renamed Santarosa. In July 1941 she was seized at Philadelphia by the U.S. and turned over to the War Shipping Administration and renamed Ramapo and was managed by the Waterman Steamship Company in Mobile, Alabama. Having sailed in at least three convoys between the U.S. and the UK she was finally hunted down while sailing alone by the U-108, who hit her with one torpedo amidships. She went down in less than fifteen minuets taking four men with her. The commander of U-108 claims to have interrogated thirty-four survivors who had taken to the lifeboats, but none of these men were ever seen again. One of her sister ships, Baron Nairn, had also been sunk by U-108 on June 8, 1941 with the loss of one crewman. However of the twenty-five ships sunk by Korvettenkapitän Klaus Scholtz, nine, including Ramapo, were lost with their entire crews. |
