Daily Event for September 24

The sidewheeler A. B. Chambers sank after hitting an underwater obstacle near the mouth of the Missouri River on Sept. 24, 1860. She was only five years old at the time and this was the second time she sank. In March of 1856 she sank on her maiden voyage near Atchison, Kansas, but was raised and sold. The only interesting footnote I could find about this ship was the fact that Sam Clemens was a watch pilot on her during the 1858-59 season. If for some reason you don't recognize the name, perhaps his pen name, Mark Twain, might ring a bell.
