Sept. 16, 1942 the Moore-McCormack ship Commercial Trader was torpedoed and sunk by the U-558. The ship was traveling alone fifty miles off the Trinidad when the torpedo struck the starboard side sending the ship down in about two minuets. Only one boat could be launched and all the survivors crowded into it and set sail for Trinidad, arriving twelve hours later. Sources differ on the number of casualties, but at least eight perished on the scene and one later in hospital. |
