August 2, 1943 the USS PT-109 was rammed and sunk by the Japanese destroyer Amagiri in the Blackett Strait. Under the command of Lt. (jg) John F. Kennedy the survivors swam to a nearby island where they awaited rescue. After days of waiting, and an extraordinary effort on Kennedy's part, rescue finally came on Aug. 8 when the USS PT-57 arrived. |
