On Mar. 21, 1943 the Italian submarine Remo was launched at Cantieri Tosi in Taranto, Italy. A sister boat, Romolo was launched seven days later. Both shared the same fate. On July 15, 1943 Remo was sunk, on her maiden voyage, by the HMS United P-44 in the Ionian Sea, only four of the fifty-nine man crew survived. Romolo, built at the same yard. departed on her maiden voyage on the day Remo was sunk. She never returned, it is believed to have been sunk in the Ionian Sea by RAF aircraft, this time all sixty men perished. |
