October 26, 1944 During the Battle of Leyte Gulf the Japanese destroyer Nowaki was sunk by US cruisers.
Sadly for the Japanese sailors the survivors from the cruiser Chikuma, which had been sunk the day before,
had been picked up by the Nowaki. None of the estimated 1,400 men onboard survived.
